Jade Shutes has been practicing and studying forms of natural healing for nearly three decades, and was one of the vanguards of professionals who helped introduce aromatherapy to the US in the early 1990’s. She has been an aromatherapy educator for over 30 years, opening her first aromatherapy school in the New England area in 1990. In 2018, she merged with graduate, friend, and colleague, Amy Galper, to found the New York Institute of Aromatic Studies – an online and live class aromatherapy school based in New York City. Jade currently resides in Chapel Hill, NC where she grows aromatic and medicinal plants, continues to research and write her online courses and spends time with her family and friends. “These plants are here to teach me, to walk with me on my journey. To share their beauty, their medicine, and their ‘messages’ – the aromatic molecules of communication between plants and humans.”

Jade is the author of Aromatherapy for Bodyworkers, one of the most widely used textbooks for massage therapists learning about aromatherapy.

The Evolution of Aromatherapy and Aromatic Medicine: Reflections on Our Roots and the Next Generation

The traditional English practice of aromatherapy has clearly evolved and seemingly faster than our definitions and understanding of what that evolution has evoked can keep up. Through this webinar, we will dive into our roots – from traditional English aromatherapy practice to French aromatic medicine approach – to understand our history and our foundation. We will then compare and contrast blending approaches (e.g. morphology, chemistry family, chemical component, botanical family, etc.) to understand more deeply the pros and cons of these different approaches to the art and science of blending and formulating.

And finally, we will move into the next generation of aromatherapy, both in professional practice as well as in layperson use. Moving away from the biomedical approach yet holding firm to the concepts promoted by holistic aromatherapy, we will take a look at the integration of aspects of both the English and the French models of aromatherapy practice and develop an understanding of how a more physiology-based approach may be of service. Borrowing from concepts from herbal medicine, a system of approaching the education and formulation skills of the next generation of aromatherapist’s will be discussed.
